Heavy rains lash Kolkata, trains running late

New Delhi: Heavy rains through Sunday night in Kolkata caused water-logging and disrupted day-to-day activities in the city.

Many arterial roads and railway lines have been waterlogged. The most affected areas were Amharst Street, Lake Gardens, Cathedral Road in the city and Jadavpur, Taratala and Behala in its southern fringes.

Local train services have been affected in Kolkata with trains running late at Sealdah and Howrah stations.

Several low-lying areas are under water and strong gusts of wind accompanied with rain have compounded the problem.

The MeT office said the inclement weather was likely to continue for the day.

The rains were accompanied by strong winds in the coastal areas of neighbouring Orissa also, MeT office said.

The heavy rains were caused by a depression formed in the north-west Bay of Bengal.
