Life comes to a standstill in Gujarat, Army steps in

CNN-IBN

Ahmedabad: Floodwaters have begun receding because of a lull in rains in Maharashtra. But heavy rain has begun pounding Gujarat now. Life has come to a standstill in Bharuch, Amreli and Surendranagar districts. Saurashtra and Bhuj regions too are receiving good rains.

The Army and paramilitary forces have been called in for rescue operations.

A single day's rain flooded streets and homes and the storm water drains have failed miserably to drain out water.

Many rivers are in spate, scores of people have been washed away, houses have collapsed in pounding rain, and crops in lakhs of hectares have been damaged.

Thousands of people have been evacuated to relief camps from flooded villages and towns.

Road traffic was disrupted following inundation and damage. Train services through South Gujarat are among those affected. And many trains are still running late in the rain-hit regions.

“All trains have been cancelled. The railway staff has no information,” says a Vadodara passenger.

Another passenger adds, “My son has to write an exam in Mumbai tomorrow and there's no train.”

So while the Meteorological Department says the South-West Fury will ease in a day or two, there seems to be no relief for Gujarat anytime soon. Heavy rainfall is also expected over Konkan, north Central Maharashtra, southwest Madhya Pradesh and south Rajasthan.
