Snow fails to stop infiltration across LoC

Poonch: This year, there has been unusual snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, with many of the forward posts near the Line of Control receiving over 20 to 25 feet of snow. And despite that the attempts to push in terrorists, and breach the snow walls are still going strong.

In the higher reaches of Sabzian in Poonch, every step that an Indian soldier takes is covered with two feet of snow. But despite the hostile weather and the threat of avalanches, soldiers are not letting their guard down, because infiltration attempts are still being made.

PRO Defence, SD Goswami says, "In the recent past there have been reports that there is a marginal rise in infiltration bids, on South of Pir Panjal ranges which were foiled by the security forces."

Four attempts at infiltration have been made in Mendhar sector in Poonch this year, On February 22 another attempt was made, and foiled, in the snowed-under Keran sector in Kupwara. The border fence has been submerged and damaged in some forward areas, but the Army says the snow has its advantages.

Major Indian Army, SM Kumar says, "It is difficult for anyone to make a movement unless they have a beaten track, so in snow condition it is easier for us to identify track. We can also identify routes they are planning to take."

Many of these posts are snowed under, but the guard is not let down. And even though heavy snowfall means that the traditional infiltration routes are blocked, but despite all this the attempts to push in terrorists from across have still not come down, and as the snow melts these attempts are going to take more pace.
