Jammu: As electioneering picks up pace in Jammu and Kashmir, an prisoner in Tihar Jail is contesting from Bandipore, hoping that it's his ticket to freedom.
Mohamamd Iqbal Jan is fighting the Jammu and Kashmir elections for his freedom.
The 30-year-old has been lodged in Tihar Jail since 2006 facing charges of working as a conduit for terrorists.
Jan has been consistently denying the charges.
He is contesting from Bandipore constituency in Kashmir as a candidate of the J&K Panthers Party.
"Our party leaders will campaign for and ensure he wins so that he can fight his case himself. We have been appealing to government that he is not involved in any bomb blasts or rape. But no body hears," says PK Ganjoo, Vice-Chairman Panthers Party.
The Panthers Party says the fight is not just against Jan's detention. It is also to bring other educated youth in Kashmir back to mainstream politics.
"It's not about wining and losing. We are not for power but want to create a congenial atmosphere. The main idea is to bring everyone back to the main stream," says Ganjoo.
Jan's candidature has been accepted and his luck will be tested on November 17.
"The Constitution and the Act lay down disqualification. If you are not convicted you can take part in elections and contest," says BR Sharma Election Commissioner, J&K.
For Jan, these elections are not a power game, but the right time to make a statement.
It is an attempt that his voices reaches the right quarters, never mind if it from behind the bars.
