Helicopter crashes in Tawang, 17 dead

Tawang: At least 17 people were killed when a Pawan Hans helicopter crashed in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang at 2 PM on Tuesday. There were 23 people on board the helicopter including five crew members and two children.

Four people have been injured with two reported to be in a critical condition. One person is untraceable and the other one is safe.

The helicopter caught fire and crashed into a gorge while landing in Tawang. The helicopter, which had taken off from Guwahati at 1:15 PM, crashed near the helipad on a hilltop in Tawang town. It fell from a height of 15 metre into the gorge.

The five-member crew included Captain Barun Gupta and Captain Tiwari.

The Indian Army has started the rescue operation.
