Chennai: The two-wheeler riders in Chennai will have to wear helmets before they hop onto their vehicles from June 1. In Tamil Nadu the rule comes into effect from July 1.
Chennai’s traffic police say the move is likely to bring down headcount of fatal road accidents by at least 50 per cent. And they're trying to ensure the message gets across to the commuters.
“Media is helping us spread awareness. Even schools and colleges are taking major interest in spreading the message,” Joint Commissioner, Traffic Police, Sunil Kumar said.
School students in Chennai wore helmets and went roller-skating for 4 km in the midst of busy roads. They hoped to deliver the public service message of road safety.
“Helmets are important because they will save your lives,” said Ranjita, a student of Velammal School in Chennai. “Helmets must be worn while traveling on bikes,” said another student.
At least 15 victims of road accidents brought to Government hospitals every day suffer head injuries. Add to that the unknown number of road accident victims in private hospitals and you get a rather frightening statistic.
Helmets cannot bring down the number of accident cases but it can definitely bring down the number of fatal accidents.
