Bangalore: Wearing helmets has been made mandatory for two-wheeler riders in Bangalore with effect from Monday. The rule actually followed on from Wednesday, but the state government decided to penalize those violating it from Monday onwards.
From November 6, any two-wheeler rider not wearing a helmet would be fined Rs 100. A fine of Rs 300 would be imposed for every subsequent violation.
Nearly 90 per cent of two-wheeler riders were seen complying with the new rule. "No one wants to wear a helmet, but since this has been made mandatory, everyone will have to wear it," said one commuter in the city.
There is also a provision of the cancellation of the driving licence for habitual offenders. The rule also specifies that the riders should only wear those helmets that have been marked with an ISI mark.
While the people were in a dilemma over implementation of the rule, which had been deferred thrice earlier, the traffic police were seen strictly enforcing it in the city.
