Chandigarh: It was World Disability Day on Sunday. Here is a report of a prosthetic centre in Chandigarh where the specially-abled get help and a dose of inspiration.
Meet 40-year-old Cheddi Lal who does not have either of his legs. He lost them 25 years ago in a train accident. But Cheddi Lal battled the odds and today he is one amongst many at the Nevedac prosthetic center in Chandigarh – not only living his own life live but also helping other limb amputees at the centre.
Lal says, “I was involved in a train accident in which I lost both my legs. I took treatment and then I was recommended here to the Nevedac prosthetic center. Here I got some inspiration to carry on with life.”
Cheddi Lal and many others specially-abled like him have so far helped 65,000 people get used to artificial limbs. Amputees have come to this prosthetic centre for treatment but then stayed back to help others
Nevedac Prosthetic Centre Director Col KJ Vohra says, “A lot of patients who came here had lost hope in life, but their lives have now been built around this center, giving them a job here.”
The centre is grappling with financial problems. But it intends to carry on reaching out to people who need a helping hand to be on their feet again.
Disability is no longer a liability. They live again. Those who have lost their limbs are helping others like them to become fully functional once again.
