Modasa: Life threatening liver infection virus Hepatitis B has so far killed 31 people in Modasa, Gujarat.
The Gujarat health department says that this death toll could rise, as about 50 persons are still being treated in different hospitals.
It has now been established that unsafe syringes and injection needles has caused the spread of hepatitis B in the Gujarat town, what is now being seen as one of the biggest hepatitis B outbreaks in the country.
This has been said by teams of both the National Institute of Virology (NIV) as well as the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD).
Health Commissioner Amarjit Singh said, "Safe injection practices have not been followed by doctors. That's the reason for this outbreak.”
Cases have been filed in the Modasa police station against five doctors for unlawful practice. Sixteen medical stores found selling medicines without prescriptions too have been sealed.
Police sub-inspector Modasa Police Station Mukesh Patel said, "We have lodged cases against doctors under sections 30 and 31 of the Medical Practioner's Act on the basis of a complaint filed by the medical officer."
On advise from the central government, a massive survey is being undertaken in Modasa and surrounding areas.
However, the health department though, is yet to determine how the virus spread, as this could have happened 60 days or more before cases started surfacing.
