Mumbai: The hidden wonders of the ocean may soon be at amchi Mumbai's doorstep. The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) is planning to build an oceanarium on the lines of similar projects in Malaysia and Singapore.

The king-sized aquariums are an awe inspiring tourist attraction that showcase the exotic life which thrives inside the sea.

MTDC MD, Bhushan Gagrani says, "What we need for an oceanarium is land, clean water and technology. We have clean water, we have the land, but unfortunately we don't have the technology. For that we invited proposals from the private sector and we have received four proposals."

The MTDC has received expressions of interest from four organisations including one from Malaysia and one from Australia. The project is expected to cost over Rs 100 crore and is expected to be completed in two years.

The spot that the MTDC has zeroed in on is a plot on Erangal beach, close to Madh island. It falls under the Coastal regulation Zone where development is not allowed.

"We need to get the permission from CRZ . Normal construction is not allowed there but since it is a marine activity, that is why I think it won't be a problem," says Gagrani.

The oceanarium project might place Mumbai in the elite company of cities like Sydney, Singapore, Florida and Shanghai.
