New York: Senator Hillary Clinton hopes to make history, but is America ready for a female commander-in-chief?
Says White House Press Secretary, Tony Snow, "I was asked the question, 'do we think a woman could be elected president?' and the answer is yes."
60 per cent of people surveyed in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll said America is ready for a woman president.
However, New York Democratic leader Herman Farrell Jr, who is supporting Hillary Clinton isn't sure.
"Her biggest challenge, of course, is to get past the issue of being a woman," says he.
Political analysts say Senator Clinton also faces an image challenge.
Says Director, Center for American Women, Debbie Walsh, "She doesn't connect to me. She's not warm, she's not like me and I think she's trying to sit down, reach out and talk directly to the people."
And this is what the Senator has to say for herself. "I suppose i could have stayed home and baked cookies and had teas. What I decided to do was fulfill my profession, which I entered before my husband was in public life."
And the there were these famous words on the show 60 Minutes, when her husband, Bill Clinton, faced questions of infidelity. "I'm not sitting here as some little woman standing by my man like Tammy Wynette. I'm sitting here because I love him."
And then came questions, mostly from women, when she did stay with President Clinton after the Monica Lewinsky scandal - emphasising her personal side.
But Hillary has stuck in there through it all and hopes to win the race!
