7 Sanawar kids expelled for ragging juniors

Sanawar, Himachal Pradesh: Barely two months after Aman Kachroo was ragged to death at a medical college in Himachal, another incident of campus violence has been reported from the state. Caught in the eye of a bullying controversy is one of India's oldest residential schools, Lawrence School, Sanawar.

Seven class XII students of the school have been expelled for beating up five Class XI students with allegedly with belts and sticks. The incident has left some of the victims with damaged ear drums and bruised bodies. But the school head master is now believed to be under pressure to take back the students.

"My son was bruised and his hearing has been impaired," said the mother of one of the victims, Haleena Bajwa.

"My son was slapped and his ear drums are now perforated," said the mother of another victim, Shalu Gupta.

Head Master Praveen Vashisht admits to pressure to take the expelled students back in the school, most of whose students are children of the rich and famous.

But Vashisht is firm, he said considering the gravity of the offence, he took the action of sending the students home.

"Within 30 hours of me getting to know about this, I sent the seven culprits home," said Vashisht.

Rajendra Kachroo, who lost his son Aman to ragging, says the Head Master has taken an exemplary step. "I'm very glad that the principal has taken this step," he said.

The Himachal government has ordered a magisterial and a police inquiry into the incident. It is also reportedly looking into whether this was an incident of ragging or bullying.

Lawrence School Sanawar has been aligning itself with its motto of "Never Give in". In keeping with this ideology seven erring students have been sent home. However, the final word may be with the school management that has yet to take a final decision on the issue.
