Himachal Pradesh: IAS officer meets near-death experience during raid on sand mining mafia

Nalagarh: Close on the heels of the Durga Shakti Nagpal incident, another IAS officer has been targeted for allegedly taking on illegal sand mining mafia.

SDM Nalagarh, Yunus Khan, who has been spearheading a crusade against the sand mafia, faced a bid on his life by the mafia when he was on a raid to check illegal mining in Himachal Pradesh. The officer almost met his end when a tractor driven by an alleged member of the local mining mafia tried several times to run him down.

"We heard news that some people involved in illegal mining are trying to lift the material from forest land. It was quite close to the lone river we have here, Sarsa river. When we came there they tried to flee. There were two tractors on the road, one tried to hit me three times. It was a very narrow escape," said Khan.

The brazen attack is a reminder of how sand mining mafias openly flout the law, often with connivance of local politicians.

Incidentally, Yunus is a batchmate of UP IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal who is under suspension by the UP government for her crackdown on sand mining. The police have arrested the tractor driver who insists he is innocent.

Undeterred by the incident, Yunus Khan says his crackdown against the sand mining mafia will continue. "I'm very confident that I will uphold the mandate of law and do well in future as well. No fear at all," said the IAS officer.
