Mumbai: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray has attacked the Bachchans and threatened to boycott against all Bachchan family films over the Hindi-Marathi debate.
"All Bachchan family movies and advertisements in Mumbai and Maharashtra are banned from today (Monday)," said Thackeray at a press conference.
“This is an affront to the Marathi Manoos (Marathi-speaking people). All parties should unite and condemn what she said,” he added.
Immediately after Raj Thackeray’s statement, police banned from him making public appearances, giving speeches or press conferences.
Jaya Bachchan at an event in Mumbai to launch her son Abhishek’s movie Drona had said, "We are from Uttar Pradesh and we will speak in Hindi. Maharashtrians should forgive us."
Thackeray defied a gag order already in place on him and attacked the Bachchans.
MNS activists also put up posters condemning Jaya comments and even booked a train ticket to Allahabad for her asking her to leave the state.
"She has no right to live in Maharashtra. She can take this ticket that we have booked for her and go back to Allahabad. We challenge Jaya Bachhan. We won't let her live in Mumbai," Chintu Sheikh, MNS Secretary, said.
Unlike in the past, this time the Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna has also condemned Jaya's statement.
"She got all the fame and money here. But if she says she is from UP, then it is clear her loyalties are elsewhere," Sanjay Raut, editor of Saamna, said.
Raj Thackeray is using Jaya Bachchan's statement for his own political gain and the reaction is already being seen on Mumbai's streets.
But the big question being asked is will Mumbai Police will finally do something about Raj Thackeray's inflammatory statements and will the film industry stand behind Bachchan family.
