Chennai: There's still days to go before the music festival officially sets in to Chennai. But for those who cannot wait--here's a treat in store for you--the Hindu's annual music festival--Novemberfest. The festival was launched in Chennai on Thursday evening with a performance from the Madras String Quartet--a quartet that plays Carnatic music. They opened with a Western classical piece and soon moved on to their forte--the Carnatic music with a Navaragamalika varnam.
And soon enough they were jamming away with Dr Liu Yue Ning treating the audience to a visual delight of her fingers hovering over the yangqin matching up with the Carnatic notes. The performance lasted for just about an hour--but the smiles on the audience suggested they knew what to expect of the 7 upcoming performances.
Sudha Raghunathan, who lit the lamp and formally launched the event in Chennai said she was looking forward to the 'Lotus' the most. She said " This time, the performance of Mandolin Srinivas because he is such a versatile genius that he can match with the mastery of any artiste from any part of the world."
K.S. Narasimhan says "I am very much interested in the hgerman quartet which is going to perform both thr earlier music and the 21st century music." Not a surprising choice for the lead violinist of the Madras string Quartet.
Mandolin Srinivas and Dr. Liu Yue Ning will opeen the show on Chennai with Lotus on Nov 11--to be followed up by a performance by the wife and daughter of Kumar Gahandharv himself--Vasundhara and Kalapini Komkali on Nov 12th.
'Ajeeb Dastan hain yeh' will be a tribute to Lata Mangeshkar by Sadhna Sargam, Chetan ram and Harish Bhimani on Nov 13th.
Down under Blues by Jeff Lang and Bobby Singh, the performance by the German Minguet Quartet called 'Across the Ages,' Wild beats Ha Yong Buand Dulsori and of course the Lahori blues by the pop singers from Pakistan, Zeb and Haniya are the other concerts to watch out for.
