Sangli (Maharashtra): The label, HIV Positive, is one that no one wants and has the proven capacity to destroy an individual mentally, psychologically and socially.
But Aamhich Aamche ( which means We for Ourselves) an NGO in the Sangli District of Maharashtra, wants to change this picture.
Last week this NGO organised a meeting between of some HIV positive couples and convinced four of them to tie the knot.
Says an HIV positive patient: "For a widow with HIV having a companion means a lot. It's a huge support. She may not tell everything to everyone but she can talk freely with her companion. This helps to fulfill her mental and psychological needs?"
Most of the volunteers at Aamhich Aamche are HIV positive. Co-ordinators say that helps a lot in helping the patients open up and share their problems.
Being married is another way they can share their problems and find a way back into a society that has almost shunned them.
"Once they are married, society views them in a much kinder manner. In a way marriage helps in removing the phobia of Aids from families or society," says Dr Uday Jagdale, an advisor with Aamhich Aamche.
