New Delhi: The number of HIV cases among the inmates of Tihar Jail in the Capital has increased three-fold in the past five years, an official report said on Thursday.
In 2006, 36 inmates were found suffering from the disease as compared to 12 in 2002, Minister of State for Home Affairs S Regupathy told the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
He said that regular health screening camps are being organised by the jail administration to rule out any possibility of spreading the infection among other inmates.
"All prisoners in the jail are medically screened and strict vigilance is being kept on the HIV-infected people," the minister added.
He informed the members that 14 cases were reported in 2005, followed by 20 in 2004 and 14 in 2003.
