Patna: Prem Kumar and Tarannum are both HIV positive. Both lost their partners to AIDS. Doctors say both of them are in a critical stage of their fight against the disease.

The battle was painful and lonely, till cupid struck at a chance meeting between the two at an HIV counselling centre.

“I met her when I came here for treatment. We told each other that we are HIV positive, and we formed a bond,” says Prem.

Tarannum gushes, “He helped me and I fell in love with him and want to marry him.”

Doctors say Prem and Tarannum are in a medically critical state and should be allowed their share of happiness which they want to find in marriage. But even for these two obstinate lovers, orthodoxy has interfered - they cannot get their parents to bridge the divide of religion.

“I am Muslim, he's a Hindu. It's a problem for our families,” says Tarannum.

Prem says he finds little meaning in life without Tarannum. “Earlier, I had no hope. After meeting her I found a reason to live. I want to determine my own future.”

Prem and Tarannum are fighting a tough battle, not only against the disease but also against the orthodoxy which stands in the way of their happiness.
