Holi is truly holy in Pink City

Jaipur: It's the Gods that they play Holi with in the 300-year-old Govind Dev Ji temple in the Pink City of Jaipur.

While flowers rain on the young Krishna, his friends, the gwalas, have to bear the bamboos from the gopis.

The bamboo bashing that takes place has its mythological connections.

The devotees believe that the gopis had asked Lord Krishna and his companions to dare not come to Barsana, their village on Holi.

But Krishna and his companions did just that, for which the gopis rained bamboos on them.

And the gopis do have a world of support even today. “I know that it is a tradition on Holi that women can beat men otherwise its usually reverse. It's funny! I like it very much,” says a tourist in Jaipur, Sara.

But quiz the gwalas on this and they'll tell you to bring the bamboos on.

“These are bamboos of feelings. They are great for whoever can take them. When the gwalas come to Barsana and the gopis come and stand with the bamboos with their heads covered who would mind? Bring them on!” says a gwala, Avinash Sharma.

Each Holi, the devotees relive the Phagun Krishna Leelas before a packed temple courtyard with a promise: drench the Gods even more in the coming year.
