New Delhi: Bollywood actors Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor were in the studios of CNN-IBN where Sunanda Wong interviewed them for the programme 'Reel Romance with Imran-Kareena'.
Here is the transcript of the interview where the actors talk about their favourite romantic films.
Sunanda Wong: Hello and welcome to this very special show and the show is all gonna be romance and love and I can sniff romance in the air. I can grope it, I can gripe it, well and if we don't feel it then we have to arrange for it. We have two lovely people, two beautiful people around here (Imran Khan raises his hand). Well the hand goes up.
Imran : Did you say that you can grope it?
Sunanda Wong: Grope and gripe. Both ways. Let's talk about your top five picks in Hindi films or Bollywood films or Hollywood movies. Let's start with Kareena.
Kareena: There are two English ones that I really like, they both are completely different. First one is 'The Bridges of Madison County', of course because I am a big fan of Meryl Streep and scenes that are so conversational, especially the one when they are in the kitchen which is one of the most romantic scenes between Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep.
They keep talking and there is so much chemistry happening between them that they can't keep their hands off each other. I think that is extremely romantic to me. It's the conversation, the banter they had, that made the movie.
Kareena (Turns towards Imran): Which is your first one?
Imran: Since you started with English films, I am going to choose the one, there is a film called 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'.
Sunanda Wong: Fabulous Film with Jim Carrey.
Imran : What I love about the film is that it's the most accurate portrayal of love that I have ever seen in films. Most films have very idealized, candyfloss version of love that you meet Mr. Right and then it is perfect, everyone lives happily ever after but that's not the case. That's not how the relationships are, you know its hard work, and in that film these two get together, they break up, they fight and they face all the problems. All the issues come up. Right in the end of the film, the girl is telling the guy listen I don't think it's gonna work out because I am like this and that, these are all the problems I have and the guy looks at her and says it's ok, and those two words sum up the true love. You will find someone who infuriates you, who push your buttons and make you angry than anyone else, But you'll say it's ok I love them in any case.
Kareena: Yes, that's a big thing. That's love.
Sunanda: Do you think Kareena can play a character like Clementine?
Imran: You know what the funny thing is. I think her character Rihana in 'Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu' is someone who on paper could have been very irritating. It could have been very unsympathetic and irritating character, someone who you would never like. And it was a very fine line that she had to walk as an actor in bringing the character to life.
Keeping all those eccentricities intact but still making it someone who is very endearing.
Sunanda: Yes.
Imran: And to her credit, you fall in love with the character the moment you see her. From the first scene you look at her and say aww how sweet she is. She is really weird but she is sweet too.
Sunanda: That's exactly why I said she is effervescent child woman.
Imran: And she has put a lot of efforts to make the character endearing. I think a lot of actresses would not have been able to do it.
Sunanda: Let's talk about another movie?
Kareena: well, I know it's going to be cheesy and I don't know whether Imran likes it or not. Saif is also like yaaa, it's ok, well it is Titanic.
Sunanda (Laughs): When Jack is dying and he is going into the water.
Kareena: I think it's because it is Leo.
Imran: That board was big enough for both of them.
Kareena: You didn't like it?
Imran: Three other people could have fit into that board.
Kareena (To Sugandha): He is dry like Saif. They just don't get it.
Imran: Why won't they share the board?
Sunanda: They just don't get it.
Imran: They could have easily climbed up and sat there.
Sunanda: I think they both would have died and that couldn't make the tragic end.
Imran: And this woman at the end, she has this diamond. Everybody is looking for the diamonds and she just threw it in the water. What are we talking about?
Kareena: (Laughs) It's the way they met. Just the fact that she was a protected girl and she wanted to go the deck and dance with the stars.
Sunanda: And love, and tragedy and all that. (To Imran) Can you understand the deep concepts of love? (Imran looks away and smiles sarcastically)
Kareena: This is exactly the expression I was talking about.
Sunanda: That should be every girl's secret that we love Titanic.
Kareena: I love Titanic.
Sunanda: Did you cry bucket loads?
Kareena: O my god, every time the song plays 'I am somewhere' I say I need to go out.
Imran: Even I feel the same. When I hear the song, I also feel that I need to leave the room. (Kareena Laughs)
Kareena: It's so mean yaar Imran.
Sunanda: I am sure you also have one cheesy romantic movie you like. Some cheesy romantic movie.
Imran: Maine Pyaar Kiya.
Kareena: Ya, is that your second one?
Imran: I watched it again recently and it's very cheesy. When I was young and I saw the film I was nuts about Bhagyashree. She was the most beautiful girl in this world.
Kareena: So innocent.
Imran: But what had edged well was their relationship. That's closeness between the two was remarkable. There was this passion always beneath the surface. I think that part was handled very well in the film.
You remember the moment when she comes and unfolds her dress.
Kareena: It was an iconic shot.
Imran: It's as like she is stripping and revealing everything.
Sunanda: Why am I not getting the same?
Imran: And then he comes and covers her.
Kareena (Laughs): The Indian hero.
Sunanda: Which was the last projection of the romantic hero that you saw and felt like slapping? Hollywood or Bollywood.
Kareena: There was a recent movie with Aston Kutcher as the romantic hero. I just had to turn it off. Like you know, just too cheesy. It's not believable, I don't know but probably Jennifer Aniston was there too.
It was one of those ridiculous rom-coms that keep coming out. I don't like candyfloss rom-coms that Hollywood keeps making.
Imran: Which is the movie with Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl?
Sunanda: That's Ugly Truth.
Imran: That is a terrible movie.
Sunanda: I have to agree with you. (Kareena Laughs) However hot Gerard Butler might be but that was terrible.
Imran: I like Gerard Butler and I think he is a good actor. Katherine Heigl is a very good actor, she is damn pretty. I was watching the movie in a theatre and wishing just ummm (gestures to punch someone) I was miserable, that was a very bad movie.
Sunanda (To Kareena): which is your next pick?
Kareena: My third one, right? I think its 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak'.
Imran: It's common.
Kareena: Just the entire idea that they sacrificed everything in love, they died in the end that just did it for me. The way Aamir comes and makes a plan to run away. (Smiles) I wanted to run away with Aamir Khan.
Imran: Since you said that you loved the end I have to tell you that it was not the original ending of the film. My grandfather wrote the film and he had this thing in mind that you can't make a film with a sad end. It has to be a happy ending.
You know the scene where a killer is sent to kill them. He injures Aamir and shoots Juhi too. Now what happens in the original script is that Juhi's father steps in the way and takes the bullet, and he gets shot and falls down.
Then Aamir manages to knock the killer down and he shoots the killer, runs and catches his father-in-law. Now as Juhi's father is dying, he realizes his error and says sorry to the kids. I was wrong and you two have to live happily together now. And that is how the film ended.
Kareena: No, no.
Imran: This was the ending but Mansoor said this doesn't work. On location they have shot two endings, happy as well as sad. And he put his foot down.
My grandfather was insisting for a happy ending but Mansoor said it has to be a sad ending.
(On Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge)
Imran: I saw the film with Aamir at a trial screening. I remember coming out in the half time and saying that this is the coolest Hindi film that I have seen. It was shot in Europe, and the costumes (Kareena interrupts)
Kareena: And it was very modern also.
Imran: Yes, and I had never seen a hero dressed in such a cool way. I will jump to my fourth film now. DDLJ.
Kareena: Again, it's common.
Imran: These are some classics. These are the films that are untouchable.
Kareena: Raj and Simran. I wanted to go on an euro-rail.
Imran: That character was like a breath of fresh air because at that point of time we were making films with ultra macho characters. Guys who take whatever they wanted by force.
Kareena: It was like Mr. Bachchan's time.
Imran: The classic mard. And here is a guy who was vulnerable, who's perhaps not the strongest guy in that sense but he was strong hearted. He said whatever happens I will do the right thing. He was not there to run away with the girl, he tried to win the girl from the family one by one.
Slowly the entire family will love me. You see how charming he is and how committed he is to make things happen in a correct way. A very very sound man.
Kareena: And a brilliant performance by Shah Rukh.
Imran: I saw the film with Aamir, my mom, Mansoor, three of us, and it was cool.
Kareena: I have seen the film seven hundred times. I am a huge DDLJ fan. Till today, if it comes on TV, I would like to sit and watch it rather than going out.
Sunanda: Is Saif like the man in the movie?
Kareena: Yuck, not at all. He is like you girls are mad, you really think I would go all the way.
Sunanda: Yes, why not. (Laughs)
Imran: It was a very good Saif expression yaar.
Kareena: Yeah, he is doing it all day.
Sunanda: Next pick.
Kareena: The last one, right? Jab We met. Even if somebody else had acted in it. I mean it is one of the most romantic films ever. The guy's character was also very correct. He always did the right thing and didn't tell her, till the end, neither did she.
It was not like romantic romantic, it was like fun but there was always the romance that Imtiaz maintained. It was a romantic film right from the word go and I hate when people say it was romantic comedy. And it annoys me when they say, 'nahi thoda comedy hai'. It's just the character, the way she talks.
Sunanda (To Imran): Your last pick?
Imran: Fifth pick is a little out there. It's a film called 'Crow'. It is a film based on a graphic novel, very spectacular. The story is about a guy who gets killed. He and his fiancee are killed by these goons the night before their wedding. These guys come in, this is a very violent, ugly scene but both of them die and the story of the legend goes that the crow carries your soul to the land of the dead when you die but if something very bad happens then your soul cannot rest and the crow can bring you back to set the things right.
So, the film opens with this tragedy and one year later on the day of their death anniversary, the crow lands on his grave stone and brings him back to the life. His body is stronger and he is invincible now and he comes back to avenge the death of his fiancee. And primarily when you watch the promo, it seems like an action comic book movie but at the core it has a very strong romantic track and that is what's driving this guy. The guy is driven by the love and the pain and Brandon Lee who actually died while making the film.
Sunanda (Interrupts): How tragic is that.
Imran: It's horrible. That was a star making performance; it was a film that could have made him a huge A-list star.
Sunanda: Alright, perhaps the last note, what sets a good romantic, whether it's a romantic, or a drama or a romantic tragedy, apart from an average romantic movie?
Imran: That sense, while you are watching it, you have to feel like yearning, why are they not together, why can't they get together.
Kareena: You have to love the girl and the boy the minute they are on screen. If the laser connect is there then you want them to meet otherwise there are so many movies which are just like you know.
Sunanda: Thank you very much for being with us and I hope we get more and more romantic movies.
Imran and Kareena (Together): Thanks a lot.
