Homeless reel under cold wave in the Capital

New Delhi: Cold wave conditions are sweeping north India with temperature hovering around four degrees in most places in the plains. Late nights and early mornings have become the toughest to bear especially for people on the streets.

Braving the chill are security guards like Dharam Pal with only a small fire to keep him warm through the night, but he says it's a matter of livelihood for him.

“I have served in Kargil but it's colder here. It's very difficult to manage,” Dharam Pal said.

People like him are not the only ones at the receiving end of the brutal weather.

Among the worst hit are the city's homeless – with not enough night shelters, they are exposed to the biting cold.

And for those at the railway station, the wait for their trains seems longer in the cold. “There is no arrangement for people waiting at the station. It gets very difficult to sit in the winter,” a frequent traveler at the railway station said.

While another traveler said, “I have just come from Mumbai but it's too cold. Now I think I will return.”

With the weathermen predicting that temperatures could dip as low as zero degrees this weekend, the administration has ordered the closure of all primary schools in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday. Secondary schools have also been asked not to begin classes before 9 am.
