Valsad, Gujrat: A silk-cotton tree in Dinbari village of Valsad district is special as it's home to several beehives that produce a few 100 kilo grams of honey every year, and it has made the gram panchayat richer.
Dinbari Resident, Magan Soma Avtaar says, "For the first few years the honey got wasted, then we decided to sell it and now we earn around Rs 50,000 a year from the sale of honey."
The gram panchayat has used the income generated through the sale of honey to buy utensils, chairs, tables and a loudspeaker set. These are rented out and the fund raised is used for the overall development of the village.
Member Kaprada Gram Panchayat, Mangu Pathror says, "We will now use the income from the honey to pay our share of five per cent in water projects and other projects for the village."
A tree humming with beehives has taught a handful of tribals in the village how to overcome the odds and they have achieved a 'sweet revolution' with the available resources.
