New Delhi: The spurious liquor has claimed 85 lives in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The death toll is rising every day. 13 more have died at Bowring Hospital in Bangalore in the last 12 hours. Total 43 people have died in Bangalore.
Nearly 30 in neighbouring Kolar and 19 others in Anekal and Hoskote in the outskirts of Bangalore.
Five persons were arrested in Kolar district in connection with the incident. However, the main suspect in the Bangalore incident has been identified as Soundar but is yet to be arrested.
Soundar is absconding with his family soon after the tragedy struck yesterday, police said.
As a precautionary measure, authorities have shut all liquor shops in the areas surrounding DJ Halli in Bangalore and have taken samples from the shops for chemical examination.
They're also raiding liquor shops in Bangalore. Blood samples of the victims have been sent to the Forensic Sciences Laboratory for tests
The hooch tragedy provided the major political parties in the poll-bound state an opportunity to make an issue out with Congress and JD-S blaming each other.
Congress took a swipe at the previous JDS-BJP government charging that its decison of banning arrack had led to the tragedy while BJP accused Congress of being responsible for it.
JD-S alleged Governor Rameshwar Thakur's administration in the state, which is under President's rule, failed to check illicit liquor manufacture and sale and demanded a probe by the CBI.
