BHUBANESWAR: The State Government on Saturday placed Assistant Drug Controller Jyotirmoyi Behera under suspension in connection with the hooch tragedy, which has so far claimed 34 lives.
The Government’s action came after the State Forensic Science Laboratory confirmed the existence of methyl alcohol in samples collected from the country liquor joint, from where people had consumed the spurious liquor.
Digestives punched with alcohol was said to be the reason behind the deaths.
Excise inspector R B Patra and sub-inspector Mrutunjay Behera were also placed under suspension for dereliction of duty.
Sources said the decision to act against the guilty officials was taken at a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the secretariat to review the situation.
