'Hope Paa's success doesn't go to my paa's head'

CNN-IBN caught up with actors Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan on the day of the release of their film, Paa. The actors talked about their experiences while working on the sets, their working relationship with Amitabh Bachchan as well as the level of comfort they feel while working with each other.

CNN-IBN: How is it playing the mother to Amitabh Bachchan?

Vidya Balan: I wish I could say it in one word, but besides awesome, let me say that it has been a huge huge pleasure. I didn't realise that I was playing mother to Amitabh Bachchan because he transformed into 13-year-old Auro beautifully. It has been a very rare and special opportunity for me as an actor.

CNN-IBN: How is Amitabh Bachchan as a son?

Abhishek Bachchan: He is terribly excited right now, Auro. He is a bit shy so he hasn't been coming in front of the camera a lot. But I am more concerned about what happens to him after the release. If the reactions post release are anything compared to what we have got pre-release, then I hope it doesn't go to his head.

CNN-IBN: You have not only produced the film, you have produced it for just Rs 14.75 crore. How did you pull that off?

Abhishek Bachchan: Quite easily actually, if I may say so. It wasn't as tough as I thought it would be. It goes to prove that today we can manage make a quality product in a controlled budget. The quest was to make a film that was economically viable and a film through which the entire industry - most importantly our distributors and exhibitors - make money. I hope the audiences feel it's worth their while and I think they will. It's a very nice film, sweet, and I am confident that unless something really terrible goes wrong in the film and it is really not liked, then on Friday itself we will see profits.

CNN-IBN: What do you think makes Paa special?

Vidya Balan: What makes Paa special I think for me are a lot of things. One, it is a very compelling story, a story that I believe just needed to be told and it's so unique that no one but Balki could have pulled it off. I enjoyed working with Balki and the experience of motherhood and more importantly playing mother to the son of Hindi cinema.

CNN-IBN: Tell us about Vidya. How's she as a co-star?Abhishek Bachchan: Vidya is wonderful. I think she has played a perfect Maa to Paa. She has done a fantastic job and thank you so much Vidya, truly from the bottom of our hearts for being a pillar of strength on the film and helping us complete this film and make it the way we wanted to. I really appreciate what you have done for us.

CNN-IBN: How is Abhishek as a co-star? This is your second film with him.

Vidya Balan: I enjoy working with Abhishek as the give and take as an actor is immense and very spontaneous. Abhishek is not one of those actors who don't rehearse and you never know what he is going to come up with, but there is this some comfort level, there is a magic in his eyes - maybe it's his honesty and because of which it becomes easier to react and relate to him as an actor.
