Hospital adopts disabled kid shunned by all

Aurangabad: For 10-year-old Soni, a hospital bed is what is home as of now. This mentally and physically challenged girl was left outside the OPD of Aurangabad's Government Hospital six months ago and since then, the hospital staff has been taking care of her, including her basic needs like changing clothes and providing her with food.

A worker at the hospital says, "Soni is mentally and physically challenged and she cannot even perform her ablutions herself, so we do everything for her."

In a bid to provide her with better care and appropriate upbringing, the hospital authorities have been trying to contact Government-run homes for girls and mentally-challenged children, hoping that Soni would be adopted by one.

However, much to their surprise, they have received only negative responses, or responses citing lack of space.

The Dean of the hospital, Dr Nandkumar Dravid says, "We have tried to contact all these special homes, but they only respond to us saying that they don't have the space and the resources to take care of such a child."

But the hospital staff has found enough space within their hearts to adopt her for the time being, with a hope that someday some special home or an organisation will extend a helping hand and make a world of difference to this little one's life.
