Anantnag: An army's ammunition depot went up in flames a week ago in the Khundroo area in Kashmir's Anantnag district. The place is now scattered with lethal shells from the depot. Villagers, are afraid to move back.

Sadia and Abdul Rashid still can't believe that a mountain of debris was once their three storeyed house. An army aummunition depot nearby went up in flames a week ago destroying their house. Shells flew across a 225 sq km radius and a fire broke out killing atleast 20 people at the depot.

Now this area in Khundroo in Anantnag looks like a battlefield.

“My house is ruined, we cannot go to orchards, paddy fields or kitchen garden. We cannot live here it is dangerous. I have to marry off my daughters. And now we know that there is no roof on our head. Please help us,” said Sadia a resident whose house turned into debris after accidentally being bombed by a shell.

“This place is dangerous now. Government should settle us outside the depot's range,” says another helpless resident Rashid.

The fire forced over 40,000 people to flee their homes. The Army has now moved in 70 teams of the bomb disposal squad to neutralise the shells from affected villages.

Brigadier K S Rana Incharge, outer security, Khandroo said “all the teams have been launched in the area. The basic priority is for the villages. Four villages mainly Pehlu, Sogam, Sudev and also the tracks leading to these villages are being cleared.”

Villagers have no option but to live in temporary camps.

Having withstood all natural calamities—floods, fire, high-speed winds and earthquake these people now have to face devastation of the worst kind. All that they want is to be relocated to a safer place.
