Kolkata: Debjani Mukherjee, who went from being a receptionist in the Saradha group to becoming an executive director, has now been arrested for defrauding investors. Her story is a fairy tale that ended badly.
Debjani Mukherjee is known as 'Madam' by the employees of the Saradha group. She is a mystery woman whose rise up the corporate ladder was staggering - from a receptionist to the executive director of the company in just three years, a company that allegedly duped lakhs of investors and drove many to suicide. Sudipta Sen's only access to his employees, she reportedly had influence in key decisions of the company. No wonder then when the police finally caught up with Sudipta on the run, he had his closest aide by his side.
Now in police custody, Debjani's quick rise and her quicker fall baffles even those in her neighbourhood. CNN-IBN tracked her roots first to her ancestral house. From a one-room house, Debjani's journey took her to a sprawling apartment and cars and important visitors at night.
Her relatives, embarrassed by her, keep the media at bay. Her family insists she is innocent. Debjani's sister Arpita Mukherjee said, "She is innocent, she has been framed." Debjani claims she is not a director and had no role to play in the scam.
The rags to riches story finally ends at the New Town Police station of Bidhan Nagar where Debjani is kept and grilled for her connection with the mutli-crore financial fraud and her close links with the ponzi scamster Sudipta Sen.
