New Delhi: Nine out of 10 Indians suffer from various types of dental diseases, according to the Indian Dental Association.
So what does this say about our oral hygiene? How many times do we brush our teeth in a day? And how often do we go to a dentist?
We might not always follow it but we all know the golden rule- brush your teeth twice a day. Brushing for even one minute is enough provided the technique is right.
As far as your toothpaste is concerned, brands don't matter. But one must make sure that there is fluoride in the toothpaste one uses.
However, there is more to oral hygiene than just brushing. Food particles stuck in the teeth lead to most dental diseases. So inter-dental cleaning or cleaning in the spaces between the teeth is also crucial.
Says cosmetic dentist, Dr.Sushant Umre, “What we don't realise is that inter dental spaces constitute 20 per cent of the tooth space. But 80 per cent of the diseases come from these spaces. We need to make sure that there is no space between the teeth or it should be cleaned to remove food particles.”
Apart from professional care, floss, dental tape and inter-dental brushes have all made it easier to keep the teeth healthy.
But different people have different needs. For instance, if you have no spaces between your teeth, you would do more harm than good to your teeth by using inter-dental brush. So consulting your dentist is what is best for you.
