Mumbai: Neeraj Grover's murder in Mumbai had made national headlines three years. What shocked the nation was the brutality that followed the murder. Maria Susairaj, 27, and her boyfriend Navy officer Sub Lieutenant Emile Jerome Matthews had chopped Grover's body into small pieces, stuffed it into a bag and dumped it.
Maria Susairaj had come to Mumbai to become famous. She did become famous, but not in the way she had imagined. She and Jerome, who is from Kochi, were arrested in May 2008 for the gruesome and chilling murder of Grover.
Maria, who was in a relationship with Jerome, went to Mumbai to become an actor in Hindi TV serials. She befriended Grover to secure a foothold in the television industry and subsequently started dating him.
On the evening of May 6, 2008, Grover went to Maria's new home in Malad to help her unpack. The next morning, on May 7, Jerome went to Maria's house and was enraged when he saw the two together. He grabbed a kitchen knife and allegedly stabbed Grover, killing him.
Maria reportedly went to a neighbourhood mall and bought a huge chopping knife and two sports bags. Jerome allegedly chopped Grover's body into as many as 300 pieces. His remains were stuffed into one of the bags.
Maria and Jerome stuffed the blood-stained curtains and their clothes into the other.
At 4 pm, the same day, the two drove to the Manor jungles where they set fire to both bags at a secluded spot.
Maria and Jerome were arrested on the May 21, 2008. Soon after the arrest, Maria took the police to the spot where they had disposed Grover's body.
On May 30, Maria Susairaj reportedly confessed to killing Grover.
In the last three years the case has seen several twists and turns with Maria's lawyers being accused of threatening witnesses. At one point Maria's family had even said that their daughter did not even know Grover.
However, on Thursday, justice was finally delivered, bringing an end to one of the most gruesome stories of crime in recent times.
