How Soren rules from behind bars

Ranchi: Jharkand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Shibu Soren, popularly known as Guruji, is back in the spotlight.

Many may have written off Soren, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for getting his assistant Shashinath Jha murdered. But the former Union Minister is now calling the shots in Jharkhand.

Soren had a busy time meeting ministers at the prison in Dumka, where he was initially moved to in view of the court cases against him there.

His visitors included Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda, who was there on the excuse of jail inspection. The visit was probably Koda's way of paying gurudakshina to Soren, whose party the JMM is the main constituent of his government.

“Does the Constitution prohibit anyone from meeting those lodged in jail? It's a right to meet prisoners,” said Koda.

And if the visits to the jail were being were wearisome, it was solved soon. Soren was shifted to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi for treatment. The RIMS, soon became a parallel centre of power.

The ministers though see a political conspiracy in news reports critical of Soren.

“This is a conspiracy by Soren's rivals. There has been no violation of the jail manual,” says Land reforms and Revenue Minster, Jharkhand, Dulal Bhuiyan.

But the Opposition, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), which was in power before Koda, is crying foul.

“Shibu Soren is running the government from prison. The jail manual is being misused,” says Chief Whip of Opposition, C P Singh.

But Soren's free run could end soon as Shashinath Jha's mother has petitioned the court against the preferential treatment given to Soren, and a verdict could come soon.

Meanwhile, Soren is at the Apollo, where he was taken for an angiography.
