Srinagar: A deadly terror attack in the heart of Srinagar, the first in almost three years, has caught the security establishments unawares and left the government groping for answers as it already faces flak over Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's hanging.

Here is the timeline of the attack, which left five Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp personnel dead and the Valley further divided:

10:45 am - CRPF personnel in Srinagar brace to face protesters due to a strike called against Guru's hanging. Terrorists disguised as cricketers enter a school ground and open fire.

1:26 pm to 1:36 pm - Sounds of gunfire.

2:45 pm to 3:03 pm: Policemen running, boarding an attack van.

3:51 pm to 4:22 pm - Gun battle continues.

4:51 pm to 4:59 pm: Two militants killed. Five CRPF personnel martyred.

Minutes after the gunfire ended, the security men were under attack again from local protester who pelted stones at them.

5:12 pm to 5:43 pm - Policemen try to push through the protesters as they continue their search for escaped militants. Police tackle stone pelters.

Within hours, the Home Ministry points a finger at Pakistan and the terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen claims responsibility even as two of the attackers remain at large.
