Mumbai: Twenty-nine-year-old Anita Chaurasia is getting her eyes tested. She is the latest victim of conjunctivitis or red eyes in the city of Mumbai.

"My eyes itch. They have gone red and my head hurts," says she.

Several cases of conjunctivitis have come up over the past week with many people complaining of irritation and pain in the eyes.

Says a doctor, N M Thati, "In the last seven days, I have seen 8-10 fresh cases of conjunctivitis everyday."

Conjunctivitis is spreading because infection causing germs thrive in warm moist environment — monsoon. It is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the tissue that lines the inside of the eyelid.

It can be of three types — viral, bacterial or allergic.

Ways To Protect Your Eyes From Infection

Says the Dean of KEM Hospital, Dr M E Yeolekar, "Don't rub your eyes. If someone has infection don't share their handkerchief. Pay attention to personal hygiene."

Dr Yeolekar also has another word of advice for people this festive season.

"During festivals, people tend to catch different viral infections when they get together for celebrations. While some viruses are air borne, one could also contract viruses through direct contact."

So go out and celebrate, but take precautions and stay healthy.
