How top cop rescued rapist son

Jaipur: Nearly two months after he jumped parole, Alwar rape convict Biti Mohanty continues to evade the police.

But the Rajasthan police have now gathered clinching evidence against Biti's father, Orissa Director General of Police B B Mohanty.

Police sources say discrepancies in the Orissa DG's statements are a giveaway.

They also assert that Mohanty actively helped his convicted son jump parole.

CNN-IBN has access to police documents in the case and they reveal that contrary to his claims, B B Mohanty was in Jaipur for Biti's parole formalities.

Mohanty had also denied signing the surety bond for his son's parole or visiting Jaipur or even being aware of the fact that Biti had been granted parole.

But then why did he fax an application for extension of Biti's parole on December 12, eight days after Biti jumped parole?

“There's no question now that BB Mohanty was present in Jaipur or not. Our investigations have proved that he was very much in Jaipur and it was he who completed the formalities for the parole of his convicted son,” says Jaipur’s Superintendent of Police, VK Singh.

Police investigations also reveal:

  • BB Mohanty took an auto rickshaw ride to jail when he came to Jaipur to secure Bitti's parole.
  • He got away without entering the In and Out time at the gate.
  • Mohanty wrote over a dozen applications to the Jail authorities asking for Biti's parole...citing different reasons each time.
  • While on parole Biti failed to mark his attendance at the designated police station for fifteen days but the police overlooked it.
  • A case was registered against BB Mohanty only on January 9, well over a month after Biti jumped parole.

Rajasthan government has clearly been pushed on the defensive after these revelations.

“Only the court of the state where a criminal case is registered can grant a bail in that case, the bail cannot be obtained from another state,” says Rajasthan Home Minister, Gulab Chand Kataria.

Not only is the Rajasthan government clueless about the grounds on which the Orissa High Court has granted the interim bail to BB Mohanty till February 5, the state government also says it has received no communication in this regard.

While Rajasthan police finally say they've gathered crucial evidence against Mohanty - who might have to field some uncomfortable questions when he appears before them on January 27 - with the police still groping in the dark about Biti's whereabouts, the vital question of 'where is Biti' seems to have gone on to the backburner.
