New Delhi: As the President of China Hu Jintao reaches Pakistan, President Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz broke protocol to receive him at the airport in a lavish reception in Islamabad.
But there is a lingering sense of disappointment in New Delhi and from the mood of the Opposition in Parliament, it is clear that the Hu Jintao visit hasn't won any admirers.
"I am unable to understand why the House cannot speak with one voice on the issue," said Leader of the Opposition in Parliament L K Advani.
The perception is that China has not moved to address India's core concern on the border.
Government sources suspect that Beijing is determined to use the border dispute as a lever against India, which some experts agree.
"They will exploit by delaying it and every time they will show as a lollypop for you but they will never hand it over to you," said Strategic Analyst K Subrahmanyam.
There is also a perception that India is unduly defensive when dealing with China:
- China was not sounded on how it would move at the Nuclear Suppliers Group on the nuclear deal – apparently such a move was deemed premature
- China's reported plans to dam the source of the Brahmaputra was not raised
- China was not questioned about reports that it plans to sell six nuclear reactors to Pakistan
- Nor did India voice its concerns about China's military strategic relationship with Pakistan
When China's actions do not match its declarations of enduring peace and brotherhood, there seems little doubt that India is on the backfoot with China.
