London: German teenager Nico Hulkenberg can look forward to a bright future after steering his country to the A1GP title, according to seven-times Formula One world champion and compatriot Michael Schumacher.

Schumacher, who retired at the end of last year, put in a surprise appearance to present A1 Team Germany with the series trophy at an awards ceremony in London on Monday night.

The team's franchise holder is Schumacher's long-term manager Willi Weber.

Hulkenberg, 19, won nine races this season including the Brands Hatch finale last Sunday.

Germany scored 128 points to New Zealand's 93 and Britain's 92.

"Nico's driving and A1 Team Germany's achievements this year have been excellent," organisers quoted Schumacher as telling the audience. Nico has everything he needs for the future - it is a long way to go but he is working hard, so why can he not achieve everything?" added the former Ferrari driver.

Zandvoort in the Netherlands was named the best A1 event of the season while Dutch driver Jeroen Bleekemolen collected the award for the best overtaking manoeuvre for his move on Team Britain at his home circuit.

China were hailed as the most improved team, finishing 15th overall after 22nd place in 2006.

A1GP is the self-styled 'World Cup of Motorsport', pitting national teams against each other in identical single-seater cars.

The inaugural title was won by France last year. The new season starts at Zandvoort in September.
