Hussain's work sells for 1.6 cr at Sotheby's

New Delhi: He's 94 and still very much in demand. Artist MF Hussain whose works were among the top ten grossers at Sotheby's autumn sale of Asian art. Husain's work, Bewildered Brown, sold for $338,000 - that is Rs 1.6 crore.

The highlight of the evening was when M F Hussain unexpectedly walked into the bidding room.

The auction just happened to be on the artist's birthday and the audience celebrated the occasion with a round of applause.

However, the top price went to V S Gaitonde whose Untitled fetched nearly Rs 2.8 crore. This is despite it not being a particularly good year with no million-plus sales, which is only expected in these times of recession.

The art market has dropped a lot over the last two or three seasons and both the September and March sales have been low key compared to pre-recession ones.

Other highlights included the sale of a 1976 canvas by leading Indian modernist Tyeb Mehta.
