Hyderabad: It has been a year since twin bomb blasts in Hyderabad killed 42 people. But in a stark contrast to Mumbai which held memorial services for victims of the serial train blasts last month, the Andhra Pradesh government did not hold any function and the families of the victims stayed away from visiting the blasts sites.
Deepika a ten year old girl was present on August 25 2007 when a bomb ripped through the Gokul Chat Bhandar in Hyderabad. The blast claimed 30 lives. The little girl watched as her mother lost an eye. “First the power went off. Then there was a sound. I looked for my Mom and then I saw her bleeding,” says Deppika
Deepika's mother Vimala spent months after the blast in hospital. She says that the incident has shattered her family, both psychologically and financially. The promised government compensation, she says, never came.
“We didn't get any help. They gave us nothing. They just provided treatment and promised that money would be given later. But afterwards they refused to give anything on the grounds that they provided free treatment,” says Deepika’s mother and the Victim Vimala.
On Monday, the state government was not holding any memorial to the blasts and no minister or officials visited the victims' families. The opposition BJP organised a rally at Gokul Chat and accused the government of being insensitive.
“They have no sensitivity. They don't understand the sufferings and the feelings of the people. People who lost the kith and kin are worried that the government did not even arrest one person ”, says former BJP President, Venkaiah Naidu.
The Hyderabad City Police has failed to trace the culprits. Their investigations have also hit a dead end. The families of many victims are still waiting to get the promised compensation and support.
With government deciding to completely ignore the first anniversary, the opposition parties, particularly the BJP, seems to have got sufficient fuel to politicize the terror attacks.
