Hyderabad: Three members of a family on Thursday committed suicide by burning themselves after failing to cope with crumbling Wall Street, police said.

Relatives of 30-year-old Upender, his wife Swati and their two-and-half-year old son Akshaj were informed of their death early on Friday.

Though no note was found in the house, the police seem convinced it is a case of suicide.

“Upender has been a stock broker for the last 10 years. So it has to be about the Sensex problem,” said Inspector Srinivas.

Police say Upender had bolted the doors of his house and huddled the family in the bedroom, where he then set all of them ablaze using the gas cylinder.

Neighbours noticed smoke coming out of their house around 0600 hrs IST.

“I met him last evening. He showed no indication. I’m shocked,” says their neighbour Madhusudan.

It isn't clear if Sensex was the only reason that led Upender to take this extreme step. But according to the police, it surely did play a decisive role.
