Hyd finds new life for damaged limbs

Hyderabad: Almost all the patients at the plastic surgery ward of the Gandhi Hospital in the city have lost or damaged a part of their body.

But doctors say none of them will get permanently disabled, thanks to a new surgical technique by which they can rebuild damaged limbs and also restore functioning in them.

Another good news is that they have already achieved their first success.

The doctors recently reconstructed genitals of a 25-year-old man by using a thigh flap.

It's the first time ever an operation like this has been performed and head of department of plastic surgery at Gandhi Hospital, Professor D Mohan Krishna, is a proud man.

"If individual organs like thumbs, fingers, penis, ear or nose are lost, they can be reconstructed comfortably," he reassures.

The technique is now being called the Gandhi Hospital technique.

Doctors say the advantage of this operation is not only that it is almost ten times cheaper than the older techniques, recovery time is also much lesser.

"In this case the greatest advantage is that donor area morbidity is minimal. We can do regional anesthesia and the patient can walk out after a week and get back to his routine," says Professor Krishna.

Doctors are now working on integrating the Gandhi Hospital technique with stem cell therapy, so they can reconstruct an entire limb.

If this integration proves successful, it could well be the end of physical disabilities caused due to accidents.
