Hyd flyover collapse: Survivors recount fateful moment

New Delhi: Amandeep Singh's first visit to Hyderabad proved to be a nightmare.

He and his colleague Ankit Arora, both software engineers from Chandigarh were in Hyderabad for a special project.

Within half an hour of their arrival in Hyderabad, they fell victim to the flyover collapse. Amandeep survived, but Ankit died on the spot.

“I don’t remember what exactly happened. When I regained consciousness a woman was putting an icepack on my head,” says Amandeep.

Doctors say Amandeep is out of danger but as he is still in shock, they have not told him about Ankit's death.

Just like Amandeep, there are many others who are still coming to terms with the accident.

“I was crossing the bridge when it collapsed. I tried to escape but was hit by a rock. I saw another car being totally smashed. It was horrific,” says a victim, Saranga.

The survivors have a common complaint- help did not reach them on time.

Traffic jams delayed ambulances and it took over an hour for many of the injured to reach the nearest hospital.

And most of all the removal of debris took over 12 hours, due to lack of equipment.

Had it been done sooner, some of those trapped underneath could have been saved.
