Hyderabad: It took a bomb blast killing 11 people at the Mecca Masjid, for the police to get proactive and take preventive measures so that innocent lives are not lost.
The Hyderabad Police have installed six cameras at different strategic locations in and outside Mecca Masjid to monitor suspicious movement of people.
Cameras are also to be installed at Charminar, Birla Mandir, Assembly Building, Secretariat and all important roads.
Says the Police Commissioner, Hyderabad, Balwinder Singh, "Video-cameras are being used world-wide for security purpose as well as law and order. We are also experiencing with that and if we find them useful, we will be extending them at larger scale."
Police say that unlike the regular surveillance cameras, these cameras would be more sophisticated with better resolution and a good memory-back up.
The cameras will be connected to offices of the commissioner, concerned zonal deputy commissioners and the police control room. And officials monitoring will also be able to zoom in on persons carrying suspicious objects.
"Technology is improving very fast. So, yes, these cameras will be very useful. Now we will have to only locate the right places and find the budget for that," says Singh.
Installation of cameras at 26 important locations is expected to be completed by the end of July while the whole of Hyderabad city can be caught on camera by the year end.
The cameras will also be used to monitor or regulate traffic on all important roads. Further, they will also be used by the police to ensure safe movement of VIP convoys.
