Hyderabad: Following intelligence reports of a possible terrorist infiltration, employees of IT firms across Hyderabad have been put under surveillance.
Restrictions have been put on Internet access and the employees can use only the software approved by the management and can do only assigned work.
These restrictions are part of security measures taken by IT companies after reports that suspected extremists have infiltrated the IT sector.
Experts say big companies dealing with data and foreign clients are more vulnerable.
"If there's any infiltration which is to be happening, they should be looking at companies where they can cause widespread damage,” says CEO, Pramati Technologies, Jay Raghavendra Pulla.
Of the more than 600 IT companies in Hyderabad, nearly 200 companies with 1.5 lakh employees are loacted in the Hitec City. These companies are even considering background checks on employees.
"As of now companies do lot of professional background background checks, but companies generally don't do personal background check, like where he is staying, how long he is staying there like typically they do for passport verification. Companies don't do that kind of check on individuals due to lack of time, lack of infrastructure. Some of that can possibly be done,” says Vice-President, Hyderabad Software Exporters Association, A V Ramam.
All these safeguards notwithstanding, the security at the Hitec City still fails to impress. The Cyberabad Police has set up check-posts on all routes leading towards Hitec City. But they are not properly manned.
Three to four constables have been deployed to check hundreds of vehicles that pass through these routes and as a results, most of the vehicles are passing from here, unchecked.
The IT companies are open to more stringent security measures. They say the new measures could cause inconvenience but they are not ready to take any chances.
