Break traffic rule, be constable for a day

Shwetal Rai, CNN-IBN

Hyderabad: You won't be fined for breaking a traffic rule during non-peak hours in Hyderabad. You'll instead be given a role to play: of a traffic cop. That’s city traffic police's way to make people follow the rules.

Says a Hyderabadi, Avinash, "It's a good idea. You know, I can remember it for the next time when I drive and all, so that I can wear a helmet next time."

Agrees Damodar, another citizen, "If people are told to do this one or two times, I am sure the number of traffic violations will reduce."

The idea is Traffic Inspector Srinivas's brainchild. And though the law books have no mention of this kind of penalty, he says it'll work and his top boss is impressed too.

"Of course, this is a bit of an innovation Mr Srinivasan is doing. It is a welcome step,” says Police Commissioner, Hyderabad, Prasad Rao.
