Hyderabad: Though the drive against drunken driving had been initiated almost 10 months ago by the city traffic police, violation of the rule is still a cause of concern. Thousands of cases have been registered so far, yet the police are having a tough time dealing with those who violate the rule.
The police find it surprising as a majority of those who violate the drunken driving rule are either VIPs or their children. In the recent weekend drive, the traffic police caught several commuters belonging to the influential families. Recently, the son of a state minister has been caught by the police while driving his vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
“Some of them tested positive in the alcometer breath-analyzer test and it is surprising that quite a number of VIPs do not follow the rules even after 10 months of strict enforcement of the rule against drunken driving,” says additional commissioner of police (traffic) CV Anand.
Last weekend, the traffic police registered 270 cases against drunk drivers and seized 86 four-wheelers, 173 two-wheelers and 11 autorickshaws. Those who violated the rule were counselled, produced in the court and were levied fines ranging from Rs 2,000- 3,000. The vehicles were released after payment.
