Hyderabad hotels face axe from municipal body

Hyderabad: The hotels are facing the axe in Hyderabad. Following a High Court order, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) s preparing to shut down a close to 3, 000 small hotels in the city. The reason- there just isn’t enough space.

The court has said that buildings in residential and commercial areas need to reserve at least a quarter of their space for parking. But small hotel owners don't agree.

Says hotel owner, Ayub, “Big hotels can create some parking space, but it is not possible for the small hotels. We want the GHMC to implement the parking rule on new establishments. It cannot be implemented on the old hotels. We will not keep quiet on this."

Owners of small hotels plan to protest the municipality's decision. They say shutting down 3, 000 hotels will affect over 10 lakh people. Public response has been mixed.

“This is the benefits the public and the authorities, but the government should provide an alternate plan. What will happen to the hotels,” says a resident Vishal.

Municipality authorities however, refused to comment on the record, but said off camera that the decision would not be withdrawn.
