Hyderabad Muslims made to live in terror's shadow

Hyderabad: Hyderabad is the city of Nizams, renowned for its tehzeeb (polite culture) and history. But in recent years, Hyderabad has come to be known as a city reeling under threat of terror.
First a bomb blast at Mecca Masjid killed 14 people and then twin blasts in Gokul Chat Bhandar and Lumbini Park claimed 53 lives.
Under the scanner is the city's Muslim population. Over 200 Muslim youth were picked up for questioning after each blast though most of them were released, with no charges against them.
Tasneem Fatima understands their trauma only too well. Her husband Maulana Naseeruddin, a cleric, is in jail for the murder of Haren Pandya. Her two sons, Muqeemuddin Yasir, and Raziuddin Naser are also behind bars for possesing Jehadi literature
"Since the Babri Masjid demolition happened, the police have been after us simply because we raised our voices in protest. As long as the Maulana was here, they would harass him. Now they have thrown him in jail and they are after our sons," says Tasneem.
At 50 years of age Tasneem is belligerent. Instead of accpeting the police charges, the Muslim women - wives, sisters and daughters of terror suspects - are turning their wrath on the police force, pelting stones and ransacking the police station in the area everytime the police picks up a suspect.
"Of course we get angry. Who will not get angry? Will you keep quiet if a stranger (the police) walks into your house and abuses you?" asks Tasneem.
This resentment is now eating into the minds of others in the community.
Civil Rights Activist, Latif Khan says, "Even though there is legal recourse, there are courts, Parliament, everything, the youngsters don't have faith. They ask what the courts and the judiciary have done for them. There is militancy and anger in their minds. It's only a matter of time before that is put into operation. A solution needs to be found for this, by the state."
Meanwhile, as the justice system fails to provide justice, the Hyderabadi tehzeeb must give way to anger.
