Hyderabad Police under fire for firing

Hyderabad: At least two more people died in police firing which followed the blast in Hyderabad on Friday.

Questions are now being raised as to whether the police could have done things differently.

In the blast on Black Friday at the Mecca mosque in Hyderabad, at least 10 lives lost and 45 people injured. But what followed after was almost as shocking – indiscriminate firing at the devotees protesting against the blast killing at least two people.

Justifying the police firing, Hyderabad Police Commissioner Balwinder Singh said that the mob was trying to burn a petrol pump and there was a real danger to the area.

“Ten people died in bomb blast and four died in police firing. One critical after injury from police firing,” Singh said later.

Chief Minister Y S R Reddy rushed to the National Institute of Medical Sciences late Friday night to see the injured.

But politicians from other parties say the concern came too late.

They say the police could have could have controlled the situation without resorting to firing.

“Police wanted to cover up their mistakes, their wrong doings and they have ensured that innocent people die in police firing,” said MIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi.

Hyderabad has been put on high alert and all routes leading to the sensitive old city have been sealed.

The All-India Majlis Iteehadi-e-Muslimeen, which has considerable influence in the old city, has called a bandh on Saturday to protest against the incident.
