Hyderabad, the new breeding ground for terror

Hyderabad: Is Hyderabad then the new breeding ground for terror? New maybe a misnomer - it's been evident for some years that the charming old city has developed a less charming alter ego.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S R Reddy said, “At times these things have happened and you know, what happened in twin towers blast of New York. Do you mean to say that all those people there were sitting ducks. Sometimes these things happen."

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister may want to suggest that terror is a recent phenomenon in Hyderabad. But statistics show that terrorism is at least 13 years old in the city.

In 1994, Hyderabad police killed three ISI agents, Fasiuddin, Rafiuddin and Mohammed Ali - all from nearby Nalgonda, involved in three political killings.

In 2000, another terrorist Azam Ghauri was traced and killed. He was linked to Jalees Ansari, mastermind of several blasts across the country in the '90s.

Mohammed Mujeeb had links with the Hizbul Mujahedeen while Laskhar operative Mujeeb Ahmed had clear ISI connections.

LeT operative Mohammed Mujeeb said, “Our target will be to target Indian economy. Through this we'll achieve negotiation and bargaining power for our community."

The police allege it was Nalgonda native Asghar Ali, who killed Gujarat Home Minister Haren Pandya.

In 2001 Lashkar militants targeted a popular Sai Baba Temple killing one, injuring 10 people.

Ingenious tiffin box bombs were used to attack police stations in 2004. The now outlawed Deendar Anjuman was held responsible. While in January 2006 Laskhar operative Abdur Rehman was arrested in connection with the terror strike at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

In recent years, police have arrested at least 70 people from Hyderabad and nearby towns on terror charges. Most have little or no knowledge about the masterminds behind terror strikes. How many more such foot soldiers of terror have already been recruited, is anybody's guess.

Hyderabad City Police Commissioner Balwinder Singh said, “We have lot of information about sleeper cells. Sleeper cells are there in every major city including Hyderabad."

The communally charged by-lanes of Hyderabad and satellite towns like Nalgonda, are a breeding ground for terrorists, sharing common cause with terror icons like bin Laden. So, even as HUJI and ISI terror modules are broken groups with terror agendas still thrive in Hyderabad.
