Hyderabad: Metal detectors at Masjids and Eidgahs is not the most spiritual of experiences. But for most Hyderabadis this year, this is the reality. With the recent spate of terror attacks on religious sites still fresh in the public mind, security arrangements have been tightened across the state.

Screening devices and CCTV cameras have been installed, bomb disposal squads are regularly checking the sensitive places and many Muslims in the Walled City are now looking at a simple and dignified Eid.

“We are celebrating Eid with simplicity in memory of those who lost their lives,” says a resident of Hyderabad, Mohammed Farooq.

Special arrangements are being made at the historic Mecca Masjid where a bomb attack in May this year killed 16 people.

The police are also keeping a close watch on the Mir Alam Eidgah where more than one lakh devotees are expected to offer prayers on Eid-ul-Fitr.

“We are making efforts to maintain peace,” says Religiuos leader, Maulana Syed Shah Bhadruddin Khadri.

But even as fear mingles with devotion, the excitement is palpable in the streets of Hyderabad. People are busy shopping for the big festival and hoping that the auspicious day will bring in a year of peace and prosperity.
